We have recently been badly spammed by the Viagra people and also from various sex sites.

So . . .
For the time being until these problems subside we have tightened the membership requirements so that guests who want to become members have to apply for membership first rather than being able to join and then post messages.
If this is a pain to anyone - just e-mail me.  You know where I am.

As you will see from the membership numbers displayed on our start page we usually have a small interested group of just over 100 - steadily increasing.
New members register slowly and many of them have been pointed to this forum by existing members or by one of our team.
As I have explained, we have been spammed quite a lot recently and so we tightened things up a bit so that we had to check and approve new members wanting to join.  Most dodgy e-mail addresses are relatively obvious and easy to spot and so we just delete them.
However, when we get numerous new membership applications all in one morning from seemingly innocent sources we are understandably somewhat suspicious. Had that been the regular pattern in the past we would have had thousands of members by now. Are the spammers trying another approach ?  It looks a bit like it.
On the basis that these new members have done no wrong and have made no objectionable posts we have therefore approved them.  If they think though that is just an easy way to come on board then they will be excluded following any objectionable post.
In future, if we receive new membership applications in suspicious numbers - even with seemingly innocent e-mail addresses then I guess we will just delete and ban them.

We could actually do without the task of checking your forum several times a day.

So, if you think we have done you an injustice accidentally, please e-mail us at euroburo@alpinepost.com and we will put things right. Just tell us who you are and we won't make a fuss. If you are genuine - you are welcome.

The object of this forum is the free unsensored exchange of information about "All things Austrian" between a diverse group of members who are interested in Austria, its culture, its holiday activities and its immense sporting possibilities.

31st August 2010

This week has been awful for automated robots visiting our site and leaving membership applications from ever more realistic/genuine looking e-mail addresses.  One problem is that malware is infecting unsuspecting computers which are then used to send e-mails.  i.e. they might be sending e-mails from your own computer without your knowlege.  Use a good virus programme and a malware checker such as Malwarebytes which is free to download. Virus defence alone is no longer sufficient.

We approved one two days ago which looked absolutely OK and woke to find our forum splattered with adverts for assorted medicines.  This "member" was immediately deleted together with all the offending posts.

This message is to assure anyone who feels they have been badly treated to contact us in the normal way and we will put things right.  Meantime we are trying our best to ensure that they don't get all your e-mail addresses for their mailing lists and that our forum can be enjoyed hassle free by our members.

Good advice David.

I use Malwarebytes, Adaware & Spybot.

Plus the first line of defence is a good firewall on your PC. I use Zone Alarm.
Also keep your PC up to date with all the latest windows fixes.

I had a real funny e-mail this week.

DHL reckon I have a parcel at the post office!!!!!     And all I have to do is open the attached file. Yeah as if I am going to do that.  Grin

Spam is on the increase. One to watch out for is an e-mail with   RE: in the subject matter so you think somebody is replying to you.

Our hosting service also provides us with "Mail Foundry" for free.  This actually filters out any spam and sends you a list at 7.00am every day so you can just browse the items and "release" anything it has wrongly trapped. If anything does get through you just forward it to them and they manually add it to their list.

As a further defence we have "Spam Assassin" enabled so with these gadgets at server level and all the other virus and malware checkers at PC level I sleep reasonably well  Wink

It's all such a pain though.
